Zhuang Hong Yi was born in 1962 in Sichuan, China. He received his artistic education at the prestigious Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing before moving to Groningen to study at the Minerva Academy. Zhuang’s ‘Flowerbeds’ are crafted from delicate hand-cut pieces of painted rice paper, which the artist has bent and folded into hundreds of tiny buds. A meditation on color, nature and form. The source of inspiration for these collages are the endless, colourful flower bulb fields that Zhuang saw glide by below him on his first flight to The Netherlands. The almost sculptural three-dimensionality makes his work both painting and object.
